Overview of Mahasati Movements

Seated Mahasati

The videos below demonstrate seated Mahasati Practice in three ways:

  1. Crossed legged on the floor or a couch
  2. On a chair
  3. In vajrasana or kneeing position

Seated Mahasati is the main practice we will be doing in this course. You can do it in any of the above three ways that you find comfortable.

All these practices will be explained in detail later in the course, so do not worry if you do not fully understand what is happening or what you are meant to do. It will soon become clear and all your doubts will be addressed.

Walking Mahasati

The video below demonstrates walking Mahasati in 7 steps. It is also possible to do the same practice with 9, 12 of 15 steps.

Make sure you pause at the beginning and end of each walking segment after you turn around and remind yourself what you are doing.

Walking Mahasati is the other main practice we will be doing in this course along with seated Mahasati.

Best to do it barefeet. Hands can be held behind or in front or to the side but should not be moving. We bring attention to the feeling of our feet moving.

Standing Mahasati

The video below demonstrates standing Mahasati Practice. You can do this practice when you feel sleepy or want a change from sitting and walking Mahasati.

Lying Down Mahasati

The video below demonstrates lying down Mahasati practice. Do this practice before sleeping at night or when you are not feeling strong or well enough to practice in the seated and walking positions.

Mahasati Minor Movements

The video below demonstrates how Mahasati is done during the day when we aren't doing anything else. Make simple rhythmic movements and keep bringing your attention back to the present.

Buddhaleela Mahasati

The video below demonstrates Buddhaleela Mahasati. It is a more intricate and advanced pattern of practice and it will be explained in more detail later in this course.

Most of the time we will use the basic Mahasati we learned earlier. This is a variation that we can do occasionally or regularly if we feel an affinity to it.

Sleepy Mahasati

The video below demonstrates Mahasati practice when we get drowsy or sleepy. This variation can help wake us up.

If this doesn't help, then do walking Mahasati or wash your face. If that also doesn't help, then do lying down Mahasati and sleep until you are well rested!
